A Place Where You Hope - EP review

Yokomin started producing Vocaloid music not a long time ago – only one year has passed since the first his work was published on Nico. But here we are – an EP’s already out, presented at Comiket 86 event August, 17 and sold out the same day. The latter came quite unexpectedly for the producer himself – 80 copies seem to be a horrific amount for the first time :) Well, my congratulations!

I must be a spoiled person, but the EP’s title… Don’t you find it a bit… eh, too customary? Well, perhaps that’s because it’s in English (Yokomin tends to name his songs in English as well). Some “Anata ga kibou suru tokoro” would sound alien enough to pass :)

The cover art, drawn by the expert hand of Gonmaru-san, must’ve contributed to the success substantially. See for yourselves.

ALGORITHM - album review

The much anticipated, long-awaited new album from Utsu-P is out, and if that’s not gross enough event to kick VMW out of termless hibernation then I don’t know what is! :)

Unlike the previous release, “Warufuzake”, which was recorded under the ‘traditional industry’ ‘big label’, this album falls back into the category of indie titles. Doujinshi, if you somehow prefer Nippon over English. So, basically, all that means just there has been less hype over it this time. Honestly, hype hardly can make good music sound better, and hype around bad music isn’t a proper thing at all...
”Algorithm” was presented at 86^th Comiket, the venue being the very essence of doujinshi subculture. Moreover, Utsu-P explicitly refers to “Algo” as the fourth his album, with the third being “Moksha”. So “Warufuzake”, despite being a ‘commercial breakthrough’ etc., is disregarded as a mere spin-off from the circle MY SONG IS SHIT. And this circle should still be considered the main form for producer’s creative work. At least for the music from the heavier side of spectrum.

High-charged hard rock cover of Yairi’s “Eien Variation”, made by cillia & niki. IA was replaced by Meiko, and I think the guys have chosen a right vocalist! And right mood, too :)

Megurine Luka - M7

Guess who's back? You won't believe me, but mstk-san (masataka, for the sake of clarity) has released his next Vocaloid work! Yeah, the second one, and three years after the first. You might have heard it – called “Hiatus”, which somehow explains the long hold-up :)

The new work’s genre is different from the past – it’s nu metal, not post-hardcore. But the upbeat chorus continues to be producer's distinct mark. The guitars sound particularly evil here. And Luka’s vocals are just outstanding – a rare example for this vocalist and therefore very appreciated.

Megurine Luka - Haru shigure

An excellent HM/HR piece by SHINDEHAI (lyrics by (V)・∀・(V)-san). Great arrange with mighty guitars and a lot of attention to Luka’s vocals. The title translates as "Spring drizzle".

MEIKO - Vermillion

Meiko-san isn't a frequent guest on VMW, so her songs are always welcomed! In this piece from Shikabane-P (aka Shohei) Meiko (V3) does nice dynamic hard rock. The instruments are too much synthetic in my opinion, but the composition and the vocalist are gross enough to overcome this little drawback.

Hatsune Miku - Vampire

Freaking awesome old-school! The flawless mix of hard rock and art rock, with the sound from late 1970-s. Miku murmuring into the microphone is so stylish I desperately fell in love with this :)

Kokone - resolution

Not three months has passed since the release, and Kokone-chan finally gets onto respected VMW pages :) So it’s a debut of Kokone on VMW as well as debut of Setsuma-P as Vocaloid producer. What can I say? Nice post-hardcore with lovely synthetics patterns and rather unpolished percussion part. The guitars are over-compressed a bit, but nobody seems to care about over-compression now anyway ;) The final is pretty dense.

Kokone sounds excellent... when she’s singing in Japanese. And Kokone Engrish is so fukken Engrish you might start pitying the poor girl… :)
