Namine Ritsu - seasons

Syuuzou-san, a renowned producer from the heavy side and an ardent fan of Ritsu, is here with a fresh song. Post-hardcore this time. It resembles Yuyoyuppe’s works so much that it hurts :) Well, if Yuyoyuppe left behind screaming and started using trappy Vipperloid as a vocalist :) The storming intro is rather promising. If the entire song had been so intense, I would have even kept a grudging silence on Ritsu’s habits. Alas! ;)

GUMI - Guitar Hero

An engaging, if a bit troll-ish, song by Rascal-san. The producer seems to throw in the pot everything he thinks worthy enough, and the whole jumble sounds oddly attractive. The shift from rock’n’roll to nu metal in the beginning belongs to fucking Hall of Fame! :) Some tricks aside, this could be described as hard rock with a pronounced Japanese flavor. Smart work with Gumi vocals makes this song really splendid.

GUMI - Rest In Peace

A pure gem of a song by Okame-P. That’s Okame as we know him: sharp, rich and undoubtedly masterful. The music is gentle, almost fragile, yet it possess inner strength, some unbending  emotional character. Gumi’s vocals match with the music perfectly.

This is the track from Okame’s last year’s web album “Cockatiel”. The album is free, the download link is below.

Kimi no uso - cover by Utatane Piko

“Kimi no uso” (which translates as “Your Lies”) is a beautiful post-hardcore song by Jiwataneho-san. It was released initially in the end of 2012 with Gumi’s vocals.

As for Piko, he is not extremely popular nowadays, so I’ve decided some attention wouldn’t hurt. The cover is made by Saya-san. Saya has created excellent vocals, I couldn’t believe this is sung by V2 Vocaloid! Piko sounds very impressive and very convincing.

Megurine Luka & Hakaine Maiko - Future

And another screamo work, this time closer to mainstream standards. Much like the previous one, it lies heavily on Engrish lyrics. On the one hand, Luka handles English faaaar better than Lily does. On the other hand, she sings it instead of shouting, which undermines greatly the former point. To sum it up, the situation isn’t *that* bad. Luka’s vocals are honed well enough, and she sounds rather nice.

There isn’t any synthetics here. Hyahyao’s put great efforts in mastering, the sound quality is excellent. Mainstream standards mean we’ve got mighty double bass drums support and pretty hard breakdown. Maiko tries to step in here, but there’s not much space for her actually…

Lily - Except Oneself

A screamo song by Ikujihouki-P. It is bare of any electronic sequences, and has a metalcore-ish cast in some places. Overall, quite an energetic piece with deft guitar riffs, but the tuning isn’t my thing exactly… Lily screams nearly all her way through the song, which makes English lyrics bearable enough :)

Yan He - Feiyang zhi wu bahu zhi sha

And yet another non-Japanese work, this time from China. The song is absolutely fantastic post-hardcore, rich, intense and extremely engaging! Yan He’s vocal parts are the brightest spot here. They are of superb quality, complex, clear and just stunning. Well, screaming parts aren’t that impressive, but that hardly matters. Jiangwu Luanwan, the producer, has topped his Japanese colleagues, as a matter of fact. Maybe we’ll get something as prominent as this from the West someday :)

GUMI - Reflection

Wow, not some one and a half hundred posts published on VMW, and we’ve finally got the music from a Western producer! That’s a fucking breakthrough, no less!!! ;) Okay, okay, there’s no need for much hype :) “Reflection” is a song by Russell Branco aka Cepheid. It was posted originally with AVANNA’s vocals a year ago. The current version, besides much more appealing Gumi’s voice, has got rearranged symphonic parts. The remake has certainly gained some detail and depth.

Hakaine Maiko - Destroy

There is not much Vocaloid metalcore (and even less UTAU), so the every song is kinda an event. Kaori’s piece has a nice djent-y flavor. It is sheer fucking wall of noise, all that Maiko’s mechanical-sounding screaming, tireless percussion and gut-wrenching guitars. Yeah, the guitars most of all. Because the mix has horrible, merciless overload in trebles. Ohh… So, guys, an official warning from VMW: THIS is destructive in the physical sense of the word as well :)

Hakaine Maiko - FFFFFUUUUU... wwww [Bay Area crunch]

After a brief period of annoying calm, we’ve finally got something interesting. Kudos goes to Shiiba Eiji, our ardent heavy metal friend. The producer has made an early present to Hakaine Maiko, whose birthday is March, 25th. The present is a classic thrash metal song, featuring a potent guitar solo by Mr. F_HotCake_20m.

Alicemagic (8.19 OTC Lost Mix) - cover by IA

The cover from the fresh Psycho Assemble Laboratory album. The original piece was composed by Shinji Orito and featured as an ending theme for “Little Busters!” TV anime (as well as in visual novel). Needless to say, the original isn’t worth your precious attention except for you’re a fan of mediocre j-rock, and I hope you aren’t. PAL’s cover is very different story though. 88IO-san has made a total rearranging. The song was converted into post-hardcore, heavily packed with synths. When Orito’s version sounded like some trash thing from 1980-s, the rhythmic nature of the remake brings it on the edge of the modern scene. Fancy breakdown and unusually low-pitched, tempting IA’s vocals make the impression even more solid.

Kaito, A friend like me

No metal from Japan for today. Why, but we have MMD from the West instead! :) Here is the work for MOMI Cup by elgordo11. This is an absolutely hilarious remake of the old “Aladdin” Disney movie’s song. You know, Disney animators made a fucking mind-blowing footage back in 1992, so it was not easy to outstrip them. But Kaito in the role of Genie looks so convincing, and Gumi in place of Aladdin looks so seductive appealing that it gives zero chance to the original!

Kasane Teto - Lost

After all this post-hardcore tiresome emotional distress an easy-going hard rock is like a welcome breath of fresh air. And after all the producers’ efforts to make Vocaloids sound naturally Kasane Teto’s ehh… let’s call it singing… is like a punch in the guts. Well, let’s be indulgent to Teto, she isn’t a frequent guest on VMW… :)

Megurine Luka - Yuishin-ron

For a long time Yuyoyuppe has been keeping silence on Nico. More specific, his last post-hardcore work dates back one and a half year ago. So ‘yuppe’s fans must be very eager to meet the new video! “Yuishin-ron”, which translates roughly as ‘idealism’, is a closing track from a recent compilation album “VOCALOUD 01 - Breaking of the Emotion –“.

It must be amusing, because the song isn’t that loud by itself, though it has a fitting character for a final composition. The song features quite complicated percussion along with developed and intricate electronic melody lines. The guitars are toned down notably, they are on some fourth plane, behind synths, drums and Luka. All of this makes “Yuishin-ron” an unusually bright song for the general Yuyoyuppe’s style.

Videos to watch from MMD Cup 12

12th MMD Cup is over. The results have been summed up; the winners have been announced and got their share of esteem. But I believe the idea behind the event is not determining winners. The works have value that is hard to measure by any way, they are made not to compete but to tell their own stories. Each is very different from the others, some manage to do it better, some lack. But as the stories differ, so do the listeners. That’s why I like it so much – each time it’s personal experience, and the real winners are not those who try to please everyone but those who aim to reach the maximum intensity of this personal experience.

Now off with pathetic ranting. Here is an array of works which VMW considers worthy of attention, and each one of them is anything but ‘pathetic’. From action-packed shoot-em’-ups to ecchi-packed ehh… excercises, the best from the East – under the cut!

Hatsune Miku & Hakaine Maiko - (KY) Hon'ne to totemae (KY)

Perfectly wild thrash metal. With a hint or two of grindcore. OK, OK, grindcore isn’t measured by hints, I know, let’s say a streak :) Of all the zoo the most crazy is not Maiko (sigh), and not Miku (even sadder sigh) but bassu ;) Well, bassu is important too, so I’m not complaining…

Hatsune Miku - Urotaeru shinzou to gunjou shigari ni nari chi kasu siren ga hidoku urusakatta

Fresh rock by Eight-san. The song, besides horribly long title, has novel character, and both novelty and character are very impressive. By a large degree this is Miku‘s achievement. Her perky vocals could hardly be considered sounding lifelike but a sheer intensity of her temper will convince everyone!

GUMI - Time Traveler

I'm desperately late with this awesome song, but better late than even later :) The reason is Dasou circle disregards Nicovideo while I favor it... “Dasou” stands for ‘Describing A Story Of Us’. There are two members, Ensou and Dasu, both are from Philippines. Ensou is responsible for the music part, and Dasu works on drawings. And, I believe, both participate in lyrics creation.

Why, here they are!

“Time Traveler” is a beautiful, very touching and bright composition. It has some post-hardcore features, of lighter variety, but the sound is quite far from the current edgy trends. Gumi sings in Tagalog language, quite unfamiliar for Western, and sounding very different from what we Vocaloid fans get used to in a multitude of Japanese songs. What matters is that the producer has created fascinating vocals, vibrant, deep and rich. English subs are present too, so don’t worry.

Hatsune Miku - Fuku-sou no Agartha

Tetraphobia_system kicks ass!!! A high-voltage heavy metal, fast-paced and seamless. The sound is yummy, the drum section being especially intense. Miku is exceptional here, keeping on par with the storming music and at the same time adding a touch of her vivid character.

The title translates as “Multiple levels of Agartha”.

Lily - SIGN

An excellent song from Zilart-P. The music is fierce and liquid post-hardcore with a nifty balance between electronic sequences and distorted guitars’ noise. Yeah, fierce, for Lily sounds a bit timid compared to such a forceful support. The breakdown, made with a help of Yuzen-san, has some strength too, though it isn’t as striking as the one from “When will you take action?”. Because, guys, dubstep is a much more common thing, and with a sheer sickness you cannot achieve as much as with a smart trolling courage :)

The version of the song with nietzsche-san’s and Zilart’s vocals is also present.

Hatsune Miku - Haruka uta

And a song by UzP, long-awaited! A grunge-y thing too, only a little different from “Sonzai shoumei”, and more classy as you may expect from such a renowned producer. “Haruka uta” has a richer, more tender, affecting keyboards line that blends nicely with fiery guitars. Luckily, the producer has decided not to ‘experiment’ with unusual vocal sounding, and we’re enjoying clean and sweet Miku’s singing. The song unfolds, piece by piece, it evolves, and it ends in an amazing emotional climax. Truly masterful!

GUMI - Sonzai shoumei

A neat grunge-y work by zakooon. The title translates as 'Proof of existence'. I always wonder why producers make Vocaloid sound worse than vanilla, out-of-the-box singing. Can’t say it’s something to worry about in this particular case, but still: why?..

Hatsune Miku - When will you take action?

Well, the composition can boast perfect mastering. Hmm, that's uncommon for me to start with such a sentence. Usually it means for the song there isn’t much to boast of. But the latest song of Kurihara Genki is a step away from usual. Yeah, you may say that guitar amplifiers lack power. You may say ‘Meh’ on synthetic parts. But, man, wait for the breakdown. Keep calm until the breakdown, dammit!

And listen through the end of it. Me, I just repeat after Miku: wow. Wo-o-o-o-ow. I don’t know if it is a sincere attempt to merge dance pop with the louder environment, or it’s just some kind of trolling. I don’t care. Because, no matter what, it works!

A poster with Megurine Luka is the center of the composition. Quite symbolic, isn’t it?

GUMI - Maboroshi (remixed)

Jiwataneho-san has presented a remake of his own song, “Maboroshi”. The song was originally posted two years ago. Current version, besides generally more juicy sound, has got more evil guitars and toned down synth parts and (to a lesser degree) vocals. The sound is definitely more aggressive now. Gumi’s singing, mellow and tender, makes an excellent contrast with the brutality of the instrumental part. Though Jiwataneho has added screaming parts as well. Overall, a great remake of a solid post-hardcore.

Let Me Hear You Scream - cover by GUMI

ROUKEN DOGS project makes covers of old dusty metal songs with a help of Gumi. The last one is Ozzy Osbourne’s piece from his 2010 album “Scream”. What should I say, my friends? First, I was shocked to find out Ozzy is still making albums. Twenty-first fucking century, holy crap! Second, I was even more shocked to find out that someone still buys these albums. Man, I’ve disappointed in humanity! Third, Gumi has outsung Ozzy (in my expert, totally unbiased and never-ever-erroneous opinion). Just think of it: vocal-synthesizing software, no, Japanese vocal-synthesizing software has overcome a man. A fucking story for sci-fi action movie, if the reasons weren’t in a man himself. So yeah, Gumi, there isn’t much to be proud of. Keep practicing.

Wow, what an exquisite song! It sounds completely off mainstream. Yeah, alternative metal maybe, only you should forget about any alternative metal you’ve heard before :p . MEIKO - inferno

Speed metal, no further explanation needed. Since 2011 Negaro-san has been in hibernation mode, his previous work was posted more than a year ago. But the producer keeps his allegiance to Meiko. “Inferno” features V3 “Power”. Power she is indeed, performing nicely among hot shredding and drumbeat.

Hatsune Miku - Kubi

Some bulky hard rock by “alt.pop” project (previously known as “Optical Tree”). No haste, no twitching – just sure pressing on. The guys use harsh-tuned guitars and perfectly sounding percussion. Many producers try to adjust Vocaloid as close as possible to the live voice, but alt.pop isn’t the case. They attempt their own way instead, and the result is quite opposite: digital and unrealistic… But somehow they manage to develop an engaging sound, rich of details and matching the music just excellently.

Kagamine Rin - Brightest

More than a month has passed since I've last posted Rin's s song. Too much, I think. I hope we’ll meet Rin more often, she certainly deserves better. For now, Jan=Junkyard saves the day. I praised his debut work, “Horizon”, if you recall. “Brightest” is a little different story. Low-tempo, more thoughtful, it still has convincing force and depth. The music style leans to grunge mostly. The mix quality improved a bit from the first work – a quick progress, I have to say. Instrumental part turns out to be more impressive – guitars, bassu, drums... But vocals lack something (sigh…) :(

Minagoroshi no magic - cover by Washakku

Hatsune Miku & Hakaine Maiko - Weaved shadow

An interesting piece by KoboP, some industrial/thrash-y metal. Maiko’s vocal has nice guttural hues here, a little closer to ‘death’ sound. Everything goes just fine until Miku steps in. And you just say: “Fuck”. Because, first, it’s Miku, second, it’s Engrish, and third, she’s squealing like before her very eyes a negi is being pushed into a waste disposal unit :) There are a lot of bands that use ‘beauty and the beast’ vocals arrange; here in “Weaved shadow” we have ‘siren and the beast’ ;)

IA - Hana sou ka

IA hasn't been in Okame-P's favor for almost a year, and our patience has been rewarded finally. As for me, of all the Vocaloids the producer works with IA sounds the best. Here, in “Hana sou ka”, the vocals part is especially good, deep and emotional. The music is lighter than previous Okame’s work, “Othello”. For the each of his songs the producer tries to create a unique character, carefully using subtle tones and shades. And I like it.

Hatsune Miku - Kara kusari

Songs that stand out by their maverick spirit are always welcomed on VMW. One of such is a recent piece by ice-san. “Kara kusari” is a thoughtful and fluent alternative rock, sounding fresh as a lemon-juice-vodka cocktail and stylish as a fucking catwalk model before she’s gulped three portions of it. Speaking of chic bitches, Miku’s singing is just awesome. Ice-san has made an excellent contrast of calm parts with bright outbursts in choruses.

And again we see eggs in the video. Someone, please explain me what’s wrong with eggs in Japan? :)

Hatsune Miku - AQ Sensen

An excellent, top-tier post-hardcore piece by Messi and Italian (lyrics by Taeko). The song is turbo-charged and steady-paced. Miku sounds very impressive too, showing the force and vigor that beat many works I’ve heard before. Well, before the English part of the lyrics begins :) But I bet you’ll not be surprised by Miku’s Engrish, we all get used to it already… :)

Makimiya Fuuki - Behind the Red

Sweet Sweet Cendrillon Drug - cover by Gahata Meiji

“Sweet Sweet Cendrilion Drug” was originally released a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away in 2009 by uz-P. Those days Miku was singing it, and that’s not surprising: back then ‘Vocaloid’ in most cases meant directly Miku. Miku was only V2, no appends existed, and let’s be honest uz hadn’t used top-notch studio equipment, so you can guess the quality wasn’t the seventh heaven. Yet, even given all of this, the song was rather impressive, and got pretty healthy number of views for the genre.

Fast forward to 2012 when Muryoku-P decided to enhance the uz’s piece. The remix, besides the improved sound, featured Megurine Luka as a singer. As for me, the progress in vocals was evident too. Now, almost five years after the original release, we have the chance to compare Miku and Luka with their UTAU colleague. Gahata Meiji isn’t a very popular voicebank. And that’s a pity, because, at least in Tetsuwo-shi hands, she sounds awesome! Her variant is much more powerful and energetic than previous Vocaloid releases, which I think fits well to the nature of the song. And a little detail: Meiji’s canon states she is a witch. So a special kudos from VMW! ;)

Utsu-P, that’s a gross piece, lemme shake your hand… OMFG?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Video by Funmatsu.

GUMI - Taihen suimasendeshita

An absolutely adorable HM/HR piece from Sousai-san. Though I definitely recognize some folk metal notes as well. But that’s because here on the West only folk bands can have fun so relentlessly, the other are all doom and gloom, fuck this and fuck that and ‘we’re all going to die’… Sigh… “Taihen...” is nothing like that, it’s about the hard battle with oversleeping :) Yeah, common problem, isn’t it? :)

The music is rather plain, but that’s exactly the case when simplicity is the supreme excellence. Everything is polished and fit together smoothly and perfectly. And this is a mighty stuff, mind you! So if someday you’ll need a song to wake you up – try this one. Gumi won’t fail you.

IA - Yume sekai

“Yume sekai”, which translates as ‘Dream world’, is a harder musicpiece by Terry Chandler. I’ll define it cautiously as post-hardcore, of older character. It is a step off the usual producer’s style, but it keeps familiar bright melodics and speed metal patterns as well. Sharp strikes of bass drums and interesting blend of lead and rhythm guitars’ lines add up with this well enough. Though the real gem here is IA. Just listen to the breakdown and you’ll agree she makes it better on the lyrical parts. Maybe some deep emotional post-hardcore next time, Terry? ;)
